I had a Facebook status today (10/24/13) on this issue, but this is the long version…
2 ‘fun’ things with imports:
That Rin Tohsaka figure I bought for $50.48 (seller: animeblooms), BOOTLEG. The product picture was/is legit, it is actually a legit item, but the product I received was a total bootleg, broke almost the moment I took it out that package. This was mildly hilarious to me, b/c I bought this from Amazon, which is probably one of the better customer service online sites out there. So, after filing a claim to the seller, they replied I could either return it (didn’t realize before, the seller’s located in China, shipping would be triple the cost of the item; so no) or get a 50% return & keep the item. Pretty much replied back ‘no, I want a full refund & I’m not shipping crap back,’ AND started an A-Z claim with Amazon. They told me that I can’t do that until the seller hasn’t responded for 3 days, but that they’ll contact them on my behalf; got a full refund the next day.
Pro tips: NEVER buy figures from China. Either they’re bootleg or they won’t ship it properly (which is how I got screwed over on my Madokami 1/7 scale figure). Also, do research on the item first if you’re not buying from an importer, like HLJ, Hobby Search, AmiAmi, & several others, to see how much the item usually costs, what it looks like, & whether or not the item’s legit. I usually do this, but this is the first time I haven’t, & looked what happened. However, even if it is legit, never buy figures from China ’cause they’ll screw you over every time. In the end, should have suspected something with a price that low for a figure that large, but it doesn’t really matter as long as you can get your money back in the end.
Hong Kong’s iffy. I’ve bought 2 things from there, first time the item was shipped in proper packaging (the box was a little damaged but not more than what would be expected after such a long trip), the 2nd time it was shipped in essentially a plastic bag, but the item box itself was wrapped in a crapton of bubblewrap, so it was fine.
However, with that refund $$$, now I’ll be buying a Bandai Tamashii Nations Terry Bogard figure, Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure, an 18+ manga, & pre-order the Persona 4: Arena art book. Have to say it, I “love” situations like this b/c one of the reasons why I buy from Amazon is b/c there customer service is so that if crap like this happens, I’m protected.
Last thing on buying imports, buying from cons is honestly worse than buying online b/c, if you realize post facto you bought a booleg, you’re pretty much stuck with it. Not to mention that they’ll do the same b/s of putting an illegitimate copy in the legitimate packaging so it looks like the real deal. Also, cons sell figures for WAY more than when buying them from anywhere online/outside of the con. So, it’s an ill-advised thing to buy figures from cons. To me, buying figures from cons is an utter waste of time b/c you’re ripping yourself off for the maximum amount of $$$ AND you’re taking too many unnecessary risks. So, unless you like buying bootleg, overpriced figures, NEVER buy from cons.
Also, here are the pics of that bootleg Tohsaka. Keep in mind, the box is tots legit.
AmiAmi’s trying to strong-arm me into paying for an item I can’t afford..? Counter-productive much? I purchased (i.e., started the buying process) a used Fate/Hollow Ataraxia magical girl Rin figure, ~$45, but then after doing so, they revealed the shipping to be the exact same cost as the item itself; so now I can’t afford it. I e-mailed them saying such & they give me this b.s.:
“Thank you for mailing us.
As is noted on our website, we generally do not accept cancellations. We do understand that many factors affect customer purchases however and for this reason we try to be flexible when we can. However, pre-owned items are only available in very limited quantities and canceling them causes an inconvenience not only for our store but also for other customers seeking to purchase the same items. We are sorry to say that we are unable to cancel the items you have requested and kindly ask that you please continue with your purchase.”
I just told you I’m not buying this b/c I don’t have the $$$ to do so, I’m not doing this to f**k with you. I actually really, really, really want this figure, but I just can’t afford it at this juncture; telling me I still have to pay for it b/c it’s “an inconvenience to you to have to cancel the order”, especially since I haven’t put any money down at this point, is the biggest load of bull I’ve ever heard. No money has been spent yet, you legally can’t “make” me pay for it, hate to say it but there’s nothing you can do at this point. They can hold it indefinitely, cut the shipping in half so I can afford it, cancel it, give me a loan on it, or close my account entirely & still not get paid for the item, but you can’t “make” me pay for it. Mind you, I didn’t know the shipping was going to be this high (matter of fact, the highest I would be paying for shipping ever) until after I committed, so b/s-ing me now is a very stupid thing to do. Also, I told them if they try to forcibly charge me for the item I’d report them to the Better Business Bureau & to my bank for fraud.
These import sites need to realize the power really lies with their customers, not themselves. They can get pissy all they want that ppl. can’t afford their ridiculous shipping prices, but at the end of that day, you can’t make anyone pay for s**t. You’re just going to have to accept that.
So, can’t wait to see what that reply is going to be, b/c I already know it’s going to be some level of b.s. & possibly the realization they actually can’t do s**t in this situation to “make” me pay for that item. I’ll post the the end result at a later date. Also, I guess pro tip here is to never buy used figures from AmiAmi b/c they have a stick up their a$$ about the whole thing X/ Customer service much?
Forgot to mention this but…
Surprise, surprise, they cancelled my order -_- They gave me an attitude in the e-mail where they stated they cancelled the order, like I did this s**t all the time, which I was tempted to reply back that this is the first time I did this after buying several figures from them before & reminding them that the only reason why I had to cancel is b/c of surprising me with an unnecessarily high shipping fee, but whatevs, I got what I wanted ~.~
